What Happened

Over the past two weeks, Anthropic has rolled out a series of密集 upgrades to the Claude free plan:

Unlocked Feature Description Previous Status
📄 File Creation Generate and download files directly in conversations Paid users only
📧 Gmail Integration Read, reply to, and compose emails Paid users only
🛠️ Skills System Load custom CLAUDE.md skill files Paid users only
🧠 Memory Remember user preferences across sessions Paid users only

More importantly, the performance foundation: free users are now using Sonnet 4.6, scoring 79.6% on SWE-bench.

For comparison, the paid flagship Opus 4.7 scores approximately 87–88% on SWE-bench. The gap has narrowed to just 8 percentage points.

Why This Is a Signal

Anthropic's strategic shift is clear: free users are no longer on a feature-limited trial version, but on a lightweight entry point to the full product.

This is rare in the AI industry. Most competitors (including OpenAI and Google) have clear feature ceilings for their free plans. Anthropic is going in the opposite direction — free users can create files, connect to Gmail, install Skills, and have memory. The only differences are the model ceiling and usage quotas.

Claude's free plan is now clearly ahead in both coding capability and feature completeness.

Reader Action Guide

If you haven't tried Claude's free version yet: Now is the best time. A 79.6% SWE-bench score means it can solve nearly 80% of real-world GitHub coding tasks — completely free.

If you're using ChatGPT's free version: Compare Claude's free version on coding tasks. Sonnet 4.6 at 79.6% vs. GPT-4o mini at ~65% — the difference is real and measurable.

If you're a developer: Leverage the Skills system (CLAUDE.md files) to customize workflows for your Claude free version. This is currently the only freely available custom skill system.

Business Judgment: Anthropic's free plan strategy isn't "charity" — it's ecosystem capture. By offering a feature-complete free version to build user habits, then driving paid conversions through higher usage quotas and more powerful models (Opus 4.7). This is a classic "good product free,极致 product paid" model.
